Building the Capacity of Charter School Educators to Effectively Serve English Language Learners

Interactive Webinar Series

Charter schools have been nationally recognized for their ability to provide families in underserved communities with high-quality educational options. As both the number of charter schools and the population of English language learners (ELLs) continue to grow across the country, charter schools face an increasing challenge to help ELLs improve their English proficiency and meet the same high standards for academic achievement expected of all students.

Join the National Charter School Resource Center for a series of webinars in 2012 that will introduce members of the charter school community to the tools and knowledge they need to effectively serve ELLs. The webinar series, Building the Capacity of Charter School Educators to Effectively Serve English Language Learners, will focus on a number of topics and will be designed for a range of stakeholders who might have varied levels of knowledge about ELLs.

May 23, 2012 , 4 to 5 p.m. Eastern Time, Engaging Students with Culture and Community: Learning from the Success of Folk Arts-Cultural Treasures Charter School. Join us for an interactive webinar that will explore the innovative international model at Folk Arts-Cultural Treasures Charter School (FACTS) in Philadelphia’s Chinatown neighborhood. FACTS serves a very diverse population, including many English language learners, and fosters a deep respect for the cultural and linguistic diversity of their community. The school offers students a unique opportunity to participate in a rich folk arts education program, to learn Mandarin Chinese, and to engage deeply in a rigorous academic program. Our featured presenter will be Pheng Lim, ESL Coordinator for FACTS. Ms. Lim will describe the mission of FACTS, key components of their innovative model, and the instructional programs and supports in place for ELLs to help them develop both their command of the content and their language proficiency in English.

June 6, 2012, 3 to 4 p.m. Eastern Time, Next Generation Charter Schools: Meeting the Needs of Latinos and English Language Learners. New! Join us for an interactive webinar that will explore policies and practices that support ELLs in charter schools. This webinar will feature Delia Pompa, senior vice-president for programs at the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) and Feliza Licon, Director of Education. Ms. Pompa is an expert on public education reform issues and advocates for policies that support Latinos, English language learners and other underserved children. Ms. Licon oversees NCLR’s education work in California and the Far West. She will begin by reviewing the findings and recommendations in the report that the National Council of La Raza co-authored with the Center for American Progress, Next Generation Charter Schools: Meeting the Needs of Latinos and English Language Learners. Ms. Pompa will discuss state and federal policies affecting Latinos and ELLs in charter schools, highlight practices and policies that support ELLs, and outline recommendations to improve the quality of programs and services for ELLs in charter schools.

June 14, 2012, 3 to 4 p.m. Eastern Time, Word Generation: Helping English Language Learners Strengthen Academic Vocabulary in the Core Content Areas. New! Word Generation is a comprehensive vocabulary program developed by researchers at the Strategic Education Research Partnership in collaboration with educators in Boston Public Schools. By engaging students with high-interest texts about a variety of contemporary controversies, the program helps all students, but particularly ELLs, to increase their academic vocabulary and learn how target words are used in a range of settings and within the context of the four core content areas. Because mastery of academic vocabulary is associated with strong skills in reading comprehension, one goal of the program is to help ELLs improve their reading comprehension skills by strengthening their academic vocabulary. This webinar will feature Claire White, Ph.D., who is the director of the Word Generation Program and an adjunct lecturer in the Teacher Education Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She will describe the development of Word Generation, provide an overview of the components of the program, and review recent research that has been conducted to evaluate the impact of the program.
